Qualifying Health Conditions for MMJ in California
How can you qualify for medical marijuana? Not surprisingly, the answer is different in every state where it is legal. In California, however, it’s easy to figure out which conditions are likely to qualify and which ones won’t. That puts the Golden State far ahead of many others today!
The use of medical marijuana in California started with patients suffering from cancer and AIDS. Today, it is still mainly used for chronic conditions that don’t respond well to other forms of treatment – especially conditions that involve a great deal of pain.
To access medical marijuana, you need to speak to a qualified physician who can diagnose your problem and issue a recommendation for a medical marijuana card. Still, you can find out whether or not your illness is likely to qualify well in advance.
Medical Marijuana Conditions in California: A Quick Primer
You no longer need to have a life-threatening condition to use medical marijuana in California. In fact, migraines and headaches are among the most common issues treated with MMJ. Most of the qualifying conditions involve a significant degree of day-to-day impairment.
MMJ conditions specified in current legislation include:
- Chronic pain
- Muscle spasms
- Chronic nausea
If your condition isn’t listed above, hope isn’t lost. There is a major caveat that can cause many other ailments to qualify. If you have any “chronic or consistent” symptom that “substantially limits” your ability to perform certain day-to-day tasks, you may be able to get a medical marijuana card
The affected tasks are known as “life activities” and are defined in the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990. Life activities include things like eating and bathing, for example. If you can perform these tasks only with assistance, or can do them unaided only with the help of medication, you might find your condition is covered under MMJ regulations.
You can also qualify if your symptoms would cause serious harm to your physical or mental health or your safety if they were not alleviated. Your physician has plenty of latitude in determining whether this applies to you, so don’t be discouraged from asking.
